Other factors may include allergies, bacterial and fungal infections. In most cases, using home remedies to treat the condition will already suffice. However, if the sinusitis is persistent, the help of your doctor might already be needed since it could lead to serious infections or other complications.

Acute sinusitis symptoms often include:

- Nasal congestion

- Thick, yellow or greenish drainage from the nose or from the back of the throat

- Reduced sense of smell and taste

- Pain in the upper teeth

- Cough

- Other signs may include fatigue, sore throat, fever, earache, irritability, bad breath and nausea.

- Your fever is over 100.5 F

Block sinuses may drain pus-like secretions, leading to thick, greenish or yellow discharges which may lead to symptoms of infection. Acute sinusitis symptoms may be due to:

- Viral infection

- Bacterial infection

- Fungal infection

Other health conditions may also increase the risk of getting sinus infections and the risk or worsening acute sinusitis symptoms, these conditions may include:

Allergies – these allergies may cause inflammation which may block the sinuses and can worsen acute sinusitis symptoms.

Nasal tumors or polyps – these may also block the sinuses or nasal passages making it harder for the sufferer to breathe.

Deviated nasal septum – crooked septum may restrict sinus passages, not allowing air to flow freely.

Infected or enlarged adenoids in children – this can worsen acute sinusitis symptoms as it is located in the upper back part of the throat making it hard to swallow and adding up to the pain and pressure.

Tooth infection – a small number of <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://natural-sinus-relief.com/acute-sinusitis-symptoms/”> acute sinusitis symptoms </a> can also be due to an infection in the upper teeth.

Other medical conditions which can bring complications include gastroesophageal reflux disease, cystic fibrosis or immune system diseases which may result to the blockage of the sinuses and increase the risk of infections.

The answer is no. Research says that bacteria accounts for only about 15% of the sinusitis, in in those cases it is classified as a secondary infection. Meaning there was irritation or inflammation in the sinuses first that then led to the bacteria infection.

So you can see why so many sinus sufferers aren’t finding relief; the most common treatment used only treats the minority of the causes of sinusitis. Why my fellow colleagues in medicine can’t understand this is just beyond me. I think it stems from medical school where young inspiring doctors are preached to by “real doctors”  to memorize instead of thinking for themselves. I see it happen in many areas

Let’s get back to sinusitis. So what is the cause of your sinusitis?

Well It depends on your symptoms. In my office our mantra repeated daily is “individualize every patient.” That in reality is the only way to combat and cure your sinusitis. Having a physician really getting asking what the cause is instead of just diagnosing it is the best solution. Let’s take a look at a couple of common causes and their symptoms.

Many sinusitis issues are caused by allergies, of which most people already know if they are allergic air born pollens or not. Symptoms such as a frequent runny nose, dark circles under the eyes, extra long eye lashes, eczema and itchy skin would point to allergenic induced sinusitis. Focus on reducing pollen exposure to cure your sinusitis symptoms. A lot of attention has been given to sublingual immunotherapy as a great way of stopping your allergies permanently. I currently have just started this therapy in my practice and the results have been positive so far.

Recent research though has pointed to a new group of allergies driven by foods as an under diagnosed cause of sinusitis. These allergies are mediated by a different part of the immune system, what is called IgG. It is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction, meaning you can eat a food but symptoms won’t appear for 24-48 hours and the symptoms are heavily focused in the mucosa layers of our alimentary canal (nose to anus). The most common foods associated with this is dairy and wheat. You can get a simple blood test to have the diagnosed but you’ll need to go to a specialist to get these done as mainstream medicine has yet to fully accept this type of allergy. I usually suggest trying a dairy free (except eggs) diet for one month. I am always surprised of how well that symptom avoidance for a month can make such a big difference.  Most stores now carry many dairy substitute milks and cheeses, so its quite easy.

Another common cause of sinusitis that is often overlooked is fungal colonization of the sinuses by molds and spores. Basements and swamp coolers are notorious for contributing to this. Molds and spores love wet and moist places, which your sinuses are exactly that. Through inhalation, they can set up a nice growing colony causing mucosal irritation and sinusitis. The American Academy of Otolaryngology has suggested that in the majority of chronic sinusitis, molds and spores are frequently the culprit.

Symptom suggesting a fungal causation include: abdominal bloating or constipation, eczema, living with a swamp cooler or unfinished basement, living near bodies of water or in very wet climates, onychomycosis, ridging of your toenails, fatigue and a diagnosis of chronic sinusitis.

I suggest spending your time and money on figuring out your specific cause to your symptoms instead of bouncing from therapy to therapy. That is the best way I have found to cure sinusitis with my patients, and I am confident it is for you to.

Sinusitis is generally caused by a cold or an allergy. When a cold or allergy takes place, swelling of the sinus cavity lining occurs. When bacteria enter the sinus cavities, they attack the swollen lining which then causes greater inflammation. The cilia is a part of the sinuses which usually flushes out the bacteria and mucus. When a large amount of inflammation occurs, the cilia can no longer function as it should and so the bacteria and mucus end up becoming trapped in the cavities and as a result the sinusitis infection takes place.

Frequently, the symptoms of an acute sinusitis infection may include cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip. When the sinusitis infection lasts for twelve or more weeks it is known as chronic sinusitis and can have added symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell and fatigue may also be experienced. Other symptoms may also occur depending on which sinus cavity that the infection lies in. A sinus headache may also occur. A sinus headache happens then the inflammation from the sinusitis infection pushes on the nerves. Other symptoms such as upper tooth pain may occur because of the pressure also.

There are numerous medications and treatments meant to offer relief to the sinusitis infection sufferer. One of the most common treatments is oral medications such as antibiotics, decongestants, and anti-fungals. Oral medications work on infections and other problems by traveling through the blood stream to the infected area. In the sinus cavities there are very few blood vessels. Since the oral medications use the blood stream to flow to the area where they are needed, only a small amount of the medication can be delivered to the sinusitis infection which may lead to little or no relief from the treatment. Also since these medications use the blood stream, it then is distributed through out the rest of the body also which can lead to many side effects such as stomach pain, drowsiness, amongst many others depending on which type of medication is being used.

There are also many treatments which are directly distributed into the sinus cavities. These treatments are generally meant to help moisten the cilia so that it can flush out the trapped mucus and bacteria. Nasal sprays are commonly used and can be prescribed or purchased over the counter. The nasal sprays may offer some relief to the lower part of the sinuses but often times may not help the infection since their particle sizes are too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection. The same holds true for a treatment called irrigation which distributes saline up to the sinus cavities. Irrigation is also very messy and generally unsuccessful in offering relief.

A newer treatment that is used nasally is aerosolized medications. Aerosolized medications are used very much like nebulized asthma medications. These antibiotics, anti-fungals, and anti-inflammatories are broken down into a small particle size so that it can pass the inflammation and make its way up to the sinusitis infection. Generally a small amount of these medications are used which results in little to no side effects in the rest of the body.

There are many options on the market which are meant to offer relief for sinusitis infections. It is important to find the treatment that works best for you and to treat the infection before it worsens and surgery is then left as the only option.

People with allergies to one type of pollen tend to develop allergies to other pollens as well. People with ragweed allergy may also get symptoms when they eat cantaloupe and banana. Chamomile tea, sunflower seeds and honey containing pollen from Compositae family members occasionally cause severe reactions, including shock.

The allergic reaction to all plants that produce pollen is commonly known as hay fever. Some  symptoms of rag weed allergy include eye irritation, runny nose, stuffy nose, puffy eyes, sneezing, and inflamed, itchy nose and throat. For those with severe ragweed allergy, asthma attacks, chronic sinusitis, headaches and impaired sleep are symptoms.

Identify an allergy to ragweed  requires a careful medical history, a physical exam and testing. The main approach to confirm a suspected allergy is the skin sensitivity test. For this, the skin is scratched or pricked with extract of ragweed pollen. In sensitive people, the site will turn red, swollen and itchy. Sometimes blood tests are used to see if an antibody to ragweed is present. This is sometimes necessary, but it takes longer for processing by a laboratory and it is more expensive.

There seems to be  no cure for ragweed allergy. One of the best control method is to avoid contact with pollen especially that of ragweed. This is difficult given the amount of ragweed pollen in the air during pollination time.

Track the pollen count for your area. This can be tracked in the news especially during high pollination.
Stay indoors in central air conditioning with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter attachment when the pollen count is high. This will remove pollen from the indoor air.
Get away from the pollen where possible. People in the Eastern and Midwestern states may get some relief by going west to the Rocky Mountains and beyond. Going to sea or abroad in late summer can greatly reduce exposure. But check the area abroad you plan to visit. It may have a ragweed season as well. You might even consider moving to get away from ragweed. Although this often helps people feel better for a short time, it is common for them to develop allergies to plants in the new location within a few years. A well thought out treatment plan is a better way to live with your allergies.

Take antihistamine medications. These work well to control hay fever symptoms, whatever the cause.

So for a week and a half, I had sneezing and itchy eyes with occasional slight congestion. I dealt with it by taking benadryl. I did not really get better but I didn’t get worse either.

So about 5 days ago, my congestion started getting really severe. My right nostril has been completely clogged since Monday with a few short periods of relief (lasting about 5 minutes to 1 hour at most). Then it would get completely clogged again.

On Tuesday, I went to an urgent care center and I was immediately prescibed azithromycin, claritin, and nasonex.

By Thursday, I tried to go back to work but had a completely miserable congested day and ended up telling my supervisor that I probably won’t be back the next day (which I’m sure she didn’t want to hear). At one point, I was so congested that I had tears coming from my eyes and I was gasping trying to get some relief and feel some comfort.

Right after work Thursday, I went to a different urgent care center close to my job and was basically chastised by a nurse-practitioner who accused me of crying and overreacting as I was struggling to catch my breath. He told me to keep doing what the first urgent care center told me (antibiotics, Claritin, and nasonex) as well as try a CVS brand nasal saline. I left there disappointed but tried to follow his instructions. Still, no relief and I had to miss work again today.

I still do not feel better. I’m congested as hell and I have since today acquired a nasty rattling cough (that produces no mucus), gagging and a sore, irritated throat. Basically, I am a complete miserable mess.

I have tried everything to bring relief but nothing really seems to work- including Vix, raw garlic, honey, lemon, tea, apple cider vinegar, nasal spray, Afrin, an inhaler, and holding my head over a pot of boiling water. I don’t even get temporary relief. It’s affected my ability to function. It’s causing me stress. I can’t work and I feel like I’m infringing on others now.

The thing is I often have sinus problems but this is lingering and I don’t know what to do!!!! I think I might have a deviated septum or some other problem and I soon want to see an ear nose and throat specialist when I am able. But what should I do for now?? Tomorrow will be day 6 of this horrible one nostril congestion and I can’t even get any rest like this. Thanks for reading. I know it’s long.

The many symptoms associated with allergies are as numerous as the types of allergic reactions themselves, but some are actually common. In order to receive proper treatment, one must identify the allergic reaction.

Some airborne allergens, such as mold spores or pollen, tend to produce the symptoms below:

Conjunctivitis is a fairly common condition that accompanies several different allergies. It manifests itself as swelling and redness of the conjunctiva (membrane around the eyelid). This usually leads watery, itchy eyes. And of course, scratching only worsens the condition.

Allergic rhinitis, an inflammation of the nasal passages, is another familiar symptom to allergy sufferers. It is characterized by swelling of the mucous membranes, often accompanied by a nasal discharge. In short, a runny nose. But more than just leaking thick fluid, the swelling can lead to tenderness and pain. Congestion and difficulty breathing can also occur.

It’s similar to having a cold; only the symptom persists for much longer than a few days. The underlying cause is also fundamentally different. A cold is produced by a virus. Here, the symptom is an immune system reaction to an allergen; often dust mite waste, animal dander or pollen.

Excess sneezing is both a separate symptom and often a result of allergic rhinitis. It, in turn, tends to produce and reinforce other symptoms. Histamines are released by a sneeze. They lead to the production of watery eyes and further runny nose. If the sneezing persists, an ache in the lungs and facial pain can result. In extreme cases, back pain can result from the mechanical action of the sneeze.

One or more result of all these can be sleeplessness and subsequent fatigue. Congestion, runny nose and general discomfort can make it hard to relax enough to fall asleep. Lack of rest leads to fatigue.

Wheeziness is a result of mild asthma, itself an allergic reaction. That is a consequence of the bronchial sacs becoming filled with fluid, similar to the way nasal membranes can. The inflammation makes tissues less efficient at absorbing and transporting oxygen, which results in shortness of breath. Thus, an allergy sufferer can see a cascade of interlocking symptoms.

Other symptoms are more common with food allergies.

A skin rash, itching, hives (red welts) or eczema is often experienced by those sensitive to peanuts, shellfish and other foods. The lips or tongue may swell. Abdominal pain or diarrhea are typical. Even dizziness or fainting is far from unknown.

All allergic symptoms are essentially an immune system overreaction to an allergen, usually in the environment. Though, there are genetic factors that predispose a person to allergies. Merely having one or more of the symptoms described above doesn’t necessarily indicate the presence of an allergy. But, when they persist for more than two weeks, it’s appropriate to seek a professional diagnosis.

Allergy is one of the most commonly occurring disorders, which makes its onset from childhood itself. Allergy symptoms differ from one individual to another. There are many different kinds of allergies. The allergy symptoms of each kind of allergy are different and also vary in intensity from one person to another. Well, food allergy is the commonest form of allergy and many of us have experienced allergy symptoms to one or sometimes numerous different foods.

The most common foods which stimulate an allergic reaction are sea-foods, chocolate, eggs, peanuts, cashew nuts, peaches, tomatoes, apples, peaches, bananas, green peas, cantaloupes etc.

For many people the symptoms are disturbing but not severe. Mild allergy symptoms may come on immediately or within a short while after consuming the allergic foods. The commonest symptoms are listed below:

Swelling of face and lips
Tingling in the mouth
Sudden onset of itching with appearance of hives
Redness and watering of eyes
Feeling of tightness in the chest or throat
Sudden headaches or a feeling as if going to faint

Some people are not so lucky, and may come down with very severe and grave symptoms as listed below:

Vertigo or sudden fainting
Rapid pulse with cold sweat
Difficulty in breathing
Development of shock with sudden dip in the blood pressure

Such cases require immediate hospitalization, as it is highly risky and can even lead to death of the patient.
