Pets suffer from many problems that can affect their skin. Skin functions as a barrier to protect the body from infection, ultra violet light and dehydration. It is the largest organ in the body. Proper health and function of the skin is dependent on the health and function of the other organs in your pet’s body.
The body’s organs are connected through a complex system, if one fails, all fail! There are two types of diseases that affect the skin: primary and secondary. Primary conditions affect the skin directly, such as flea infestations. Secondary diseases are those that first involve other organs and affect the skin as a result of the affected organs. The following are some common diseases which affect the skin and a brief description, of their treatments.

My three year old cat was so itchy two years ago and developed skinlesions that would scab and bleed. I took her to two separate vets. They did food trials, bloodwork, fleas negative, ringworm negative, ear mites negative, feline leukemia negative. They tried antibiotics, flea meds, and gave steroids for relief. To make along story short, before consenting to a biopsy or expensive allergy testing, I went to a local natural petfood store and got some different food. She has been perfectly fine for a whole year. Now, two weeks ago , she has started with the skin problems again. Anybody else have similar experience?? I have made appt. with vet next week but wonder if anyone has advice.

We have a beagle who has pretty badly allergies and when we adopted him he was in terrible shape. Sneezing, biting, scratching, etc, His skin was flaking off and his fur was coming out in clumps. We took him home, put him on blue buffalo and that has helped clear things up tremendously. The only problem is we’re still trying to find a good shampoo that works for him. He doesn’t need a bath often and I can always take him to the vet for a relief bath but their relief baths are ridiculously overpriced and if I can find a good product at a pet store I’d rather give him a bath at home.
Thanks for your help.

I was told it may be from allergies, but no clue what is causing it. My dog has lost hair in patches from itching. Any shots or antibiotics from the vet only provide temporary relief.

Every year as the weather gets warm- late spring, early summer, along with seasonal allergies the skin around my mouth, chin, nose becomes VERY dry and painful. Burns, itches, flakes. Put anything on it burns, still a vat of vaseline won’t help. Doctors, even dermatologists don’t know what it is. It is so distressing and uncomfortable I am in tears. Only relief is if the skin is wet but then it just gets dryer. It will go away then return a time or two, not as bad and then it doesn’t happen again until next year. It has been 5 or so years so far. Any ideas? I’m desperate.

My poor dag Junior-hes 7 yrs old has been batteling bad skin allergies for the most part of his life. I understand these can be frustrating and can be food related, envioremental, ect… I had narrowed down the food allergies a little-he is COMPLETELY on homemade food and its VERY nutritional balanced and I covered all other fields as well. I constantly clean his paws after being outside, as well as using triple antibiotic ointment and Malaseb(RX) bath and flush. He usually gets a prednosone shot which is supposed to last app 6 wks..but only gives relief for about 1-2 wks. I just switched vets & after doing a superchem &cbc, & all coming back great he wants to give prednosone/cortisone and anti biotics- but the more research i do the more the steriod use scares me. I want junior to have relief- he suffers EVERYDAY ALL DAY..BUT i absolutely dont want to give him anything that will harm him in the long run- does anyone have any advice out there?
i just wanted to add that i have spoken to the vet about this, we just came back today and like i said he recomended the steriods(just like my other vet for the past 5 years)- i just switched to him because he specializes in allergies and skin conditions. And Junior LIVES on benedryl most every day:( and does get an rx spray to try to elliviate the itching So i guess i was looking for more of a holistic method or someone that chose NOT to use the steriods and maybe had another injection work?

I have no allergies that I know of other than being allergic to pollen. But I have never had itchy skin like this in my life. I itch horribly on my upper body excluding my face. I feel like I have itchitis (whatever that is, lol) but seriously has anyone experienced this or know of someone who has? This is non-stop and I need some form of relief.
Thanks

I have a 9yr old pitbull with skin allergies, it was never determined what her allergy was, but it has been being controlled by daily Benadryl per the vet, but she still can get itchy and now being winter her skin is very dry, I’ve been using Hypo allergenic Oatmeal shampoo on her and Resincort lotion on her after but she’s still very dry, and I just adopted a corgi who is also very itchy! Not as dry but I did notice even when I saw him at the shelter he was itchy (no fleas or mites) and he’s been licking his paws alot (Im going to assume he has some sort of allergy too!!! He has a vet appointment on tuesday) The oatmeal shampoo doesn’t seem to be working any miracles on him either, I actually work at the vet in the grooming department, and theres three medicated shampoo’s that im looking at to get for the two of them, and was just wondering on other peoples opinion’s on which shampoo out of the three would be the best for the itchy’s and dry skin, There’s Dermal-Soothe, Relief, and Epi Soothe, any opinions?
