Pets suffer from many problems that can affect their skin. Skin functions as a barrier to protect the body from infection, ultra violet light and dehydration. It is the largest organ in the body. Proper health and function of the skin is dependent on the health and function of the other organs in your pet’s body.
The body’s organs are connected through a complex system, if one fails, all fail! There are two types of diseases that affect the skin: primary and secondary. Primary conditions affect the skin directly, such as flea infestations. Secondary diseases are those that first involve other organs and affect the skin as a result of the affected organs. The following are some common diseases which affect the skin and a brief description, of their treatments.

My three year old cat was so itchy two years ago and developed skinlesions that would scab and bleed. I took her to two separate vets. They did food trials, bloodwork, fleas negative, ringworm negative, ear mites negative, feline leukemia negative. They tried antibiotics, flea meds, and gave steroids for relief. To make along story short, before consenting to a biopsy or expensive allergy testing, I went to a local natural petfood store and got some different food. She has been perfectly fine for a whole year. Now, two weeks ago , she has started with the skin problems again. Anybody else have similar experience?? I have made appt. with vet next week but wonder if anyone has advice.

We have a beagle who has pretty badly allergies and when we adopted him he was in terrible shape. Sneezing, biting, scratching, etc, His skin was flaking off and his fur was coming out in clumps. We took him home, put him on blue buffalo and that has helped clear things up tremendously. The only problem is we’re still trying to find a good shampoo that works for him. He doesn’t need a bath often and I can always take him to the vet for a relief bath but their relief baths are ridiculously overpriced and if I can find a good product at a pet store I’d rather give him a bath at home.
Thanks for your help.

I was told it may be from allergies, but no clue what is causing it. My dog has lost hair in patches from itching. Any shots or antibiotics from the vet only provide temporary relief.

Every year as the weather gets warm- late spring, early summer, along with seasonal allergies the skin around my mouth, chin, nose becomes VERY dry and painful. Burns, itches, flakes. Put anything on it burns, still a vat of vaseline won’t help. Doctors, even dermatologists don’t know what it is. It is so distressing and uncomfortable I am in tears. Only relief is if the skin is wet but then it just gets dryer. It will go away then return a time or two, not as bad and then it doesn’t happen again until next year. It has been 5 or so years so far. Any ideas? I’m desperate.
