What To Do When Your Canine Is Suffering From Dog Skin Allergies

Article by Jennifer Gretson

Just like people, mans best friend can suffer from dog skin allergies. And like us, they want relief. Unfortunately for them, the only solution they know is to keep scratching themselves, trying to provide some sort of end to their suffering. Sometimes you have to step in and help them out. But what can you do?

The very first thing that you should do is to find out why they are scratching so much. Move fur out of the way to inspect the affected area, where they seem to be scratching the most, and look for indications of the dog skin allergies, such as dry skin, bite marks, rashes, or other irritations. This is key to figuring out what to do to help your dog end its suffering.

Fleas may be a possible culprit. If you discover flea bites or the actual pests, there are several medications available to rid them from your canine. You can also bathe you dog in anti-flea baths to reduce the amount of fleas present on their bodies.

However, if you find dry skin or rashes, you need to find the source of their allergy. Using a simple process of elimination, observe what they eat and their activities. There can be many thing that trigger allergic reactions, but it should not take long to determine the culprit. Removing the source of an allergy is usually much easier than continually treating the symptoms.

When your dog has a reaction to some kind of irritant, you need to clean the irritant from their coat. An economical and quick solution if you do not have dog shampoos available is to wash the irritated area with a mild dish soap. This may ease their irritation and suffering, but it oftentimes will not relieve their irritation.

You may want to consider purchasing medications for your dog to alleviate the mild and moderate irritation. Many creams and sprays are available over the counter at most pet shops and some supermarkets. If the problem seems more serious, you should consult with a professional. They may prescribe stronger creams or oral medications.

You may be able to help your dog by changing their diet to include supplemental vitamins. These supplements are essential for making sure that your dog is getting the vitamins they need for healthy coat and fur development. You should consider this, even if your canines symptoms are not caused by food. Supplements can be purchased from most pet stores.

There is a small chance that a dog can have life threatening reactions to conditions of this nature. If your dog has a hard time breathing, seems to be drooling uncontrollably, has any swelling (especially facial or on their paws), or has lost consciousness, you need to bring them to an emergency veterinarian immediately. Generally, life threatening reactions are caused by vaccines and medications.

Dogs suffer from allergies just like people do. They will usually let you know by frequently scratching the affected area. You can help them to feel better by finding the source of the allergy and providing the proper care. Do not let your dog suffer, locate and treat their dog skin allergies.

I have a dog with itching problem. I use canine advanitx on her and have also been giving her supplements for skin and coat.

I understand that benadryl(diphenhydramine) helps provide relief. Drs Foster/Smith sells benadryl in 50 mg caps. That is plenty for a person, it seems like a lot for an animal.

I am interested in hearing what other dog owners have had success with, in terms of treating canine skin allergy symptoms?

Best answer:

Answer by lulu
Change her food to Nutra Max Natural Choice. My dog itched, lost his hair, had hot spots, etc., until I changed his food. This food worked wonders for years!!

Question by charlotte g: My cat has a skin allergy to the flea bites. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what to do for him?
I have been giving him some liquid vitamins that have omega fish oils and stuff in it. It supposively helps, but he still is so miserable. I have treated him for the fleas with frontline. But his skin has lessions on it and he constantly licks himself and scratches. What else can I do to help him get some relief?

Best answer:

Answer by B R
Definitely get with your vet on this. They may be able to prescribe something. I feed my cat cooked chicken/veggies cooked with diced garlic. They say garlic is a natural flea repellant and it has worked on my Maximus. I hope your fur-baby feels better soon. Get with your Vet though for complete relief!!! (PS.. the saliva from the licking is probably very helpful to your cat’s healing process.)

According to studies conducted on NASONEX, you can expect to see a complete turnaround from allergies in two weeks.

How does it prevent seasonal allergies? The remedy prevents seasonal allergies, since the spray was invented to fight allergens that cause allergies. Pollen is the single most pollution in the air that affects millions of people, which is why NASONEX was invented.

Is the product safe to use?

The spray may cause adverse effects, such as coughing, nosebleeds, sore throat, headaches and viral infection. Talk with your family doctor to learn more about NASONEX. This remedy is not for everyone, so you should ask your doctor first before taking the medication. Of course, your doctor must prescribe NASONEX. In some instances, doctors will prescribe the medication and learn that your body is not tolerant to the ingredients. If you are prescribed this nasal spray and side effects occur, speak with your doctor immediately. Doctors prescribe NASONEX to both adults and children; so most people can tolerate the ingredients.

Something you want to keep in mind is that allergies differ with most people.

According to some experts in medicine, “allergic noses” differ from common allergies. Still, the symptoms relate. For instance, when someone has allergic nose, they will sneeze and sniffle.

The nose will drip and feel stuffed up. The nose will itch when a person suffers of allergic nose.

How do doctors treat allergic nose?

Doctors often run allergy tests. Skin test is another method doctors use to find causes behind allergic nose. Blood test can help a doctor find allergic nose conditions also.

How does allergic nose start?

What causes allergic nose differs with most people. Pollen can cause this condition. Dust, cats, dust mites, dog hairs and so on can cause allergic reactions.

How do doctors treat allergic nose?

Doctors may consider decongestants, antihistamines, cromolyn sodium, or Corti-Costeroids, usually the sprays to treat such conditions. Shots to desensitize the patient of his or her allergies is also a treatment doctors use to treat the condition. Pills to control blood pressure are given in some instances.

Doctors often consider the nose when searching for allergic causes. Sometimes a patient has infections to the sinus, nosebleeds, or fluid inside the ear. Doctors consider each detail when finding treatments for allergies.

I managed to get rid of it with the steroid cream and pills but we still don’t know what was causing it. We even got me re tested for my allergies but the doctor can’t seem to figure it out.

Can steroids dry out your skin though?

I’ve noticed when I was taking accutain that dried up my skin a lot and when I started taking those steroids for my rash my skin got really dry again.

I put on some more of the cream cuz some of it was coming back on my legs and now my face is peeling again and REALLY itchy on my lower cheeks and on my jaw line and on my neck!!

Can this have to do with the cream? And if so how do I get rid of this itch?? All I can do is put temporary relief creams on it.

Any advise??

this may sound like a silly question… but i’m beginning to get desperate!

lately my skin has been extremal super sensitive.. and i’ve been breaking out in hives and rashes… zits and even getting a few brown spots popping up!

i find i can hardly touch anything without breaking out and spending the next few hours trying to get some sort of relief…

touching paper (of any sort) makes my skin sooo super dry that even the lotion doesn’t give any help.

even my clothe has got me covered in itchy hives.. (the only thing i can wear is my blue fall jacket… (sorry i don’t know what it is made of but if i had to guess i’d say woolen cotton? not even sure if that’s a real thing lol)

anyways the only thing i can think it must be is Allergies, i took some benadril last night and the only thing it really did was knock me out lol.

any ideas what i can do or try that doesn’t involve a Dr?

Caney’s got some seriously dry skin! I bathed her a few days ago with a new dog shampoo (which claims to be gentle and hypoallergenic) and since then her skin has been bright pink and her coat SO dry and course; it even feels brittle. And she’s always had THE SOFTEST fur! =(

Is there anything I can put on her to help moisturize her skin and coat and give her some relief from the itching?? Any product or remedy that you can recommend, I’m all ears. It would probably need to be something very gentle (since she’s already got allergies), and preferably something that doesn’t require me bathing her again (although I will if I absolutely must).

I’ll be returning this shampoo to PetSmart today, so if you can also recommend a good brand of shampoo that is VERY mild and conditioning… for FUTURE use… I’d appreciate it =)

Thanks guys!
I’ve actually been giving her fish oil capsules, a few times a day for at least a month now.

And I made sure to rinse her VERY thoroughly after her bath (we have a spray attachment in our shower just for bathing the dogs).

The brand of shampoo was Perfect Coat, and it claims to be “hypoallergenic” — no perfumes or dyes. Apparently it was still chocked full of drying, irritating soap.

I actually have been putting tea tree oil on her… mainly just on her rash though (on her groin) I also bought a “Hot Spot” spray containing tea tree oil, aloe, and chamomile, to put on her rash. Should I use that all over her body for the dryness?? Since the shampoo incident I’m hesitant to put anything else on her, plus this Hot Spot spray doesn’t list ingredients other than those three I mentioned, which makes me suspicious =?

With the wide range of supplements, prescriptions and over the counter medications available, there is no reason for your pet to suffer with itchy dry skin, bald spots, or poor smell. Many options are available to treat the skin and coat conditions that commonly affect pets.

If your pet suffers from a cut, it is important to clean and treat it right away. If it develops an infection, it may not heal properly, and this may increase the time needed for the cut to heal. It can also develop unsightly scar tissue. A prescription topical ointment such as Animax or Panalog is commonly prescribed for treatment of such injuries. These ointments are multifunctional, and kill bacteria as well as fungus.

For pets that suffer from food allergies, it is important to realize that these allergies can affect much more than the digestive system. The skin and coat of a dog suffering from allergies may have a rough quality, and the pet’s skin may itch. This can lead to excessive scratching, which, in turn, leads to additional skin problems. Atopica is an oral form of cyclosporine that is often prescribed to treat allergies. It is a very effective medication, and can provide your pet with almost immediate relief.

For the pet that suffers from chronic ringworm or other persistent skin problems, an oral antifungal such as Ketoconazole, which may be coupled with a topical antifungal, like Panalog, is often necessary to break through the stubborn cycle of fungal infections.

There are also a variety of shampoos and sprays that can be used to treat your pet’s skin condition. Hexadene is a medicated shampoo commonly provided for skin conditions. If your dog suffers from allergies, Histacalm, which contains diphenhydramine HCI, helps to calm the skin. Dermacool, a spray that is available with lidocaine, helps to calm irritated skin as well. Gentocin is an antibiotic spray used in the treatment of skin conditions. If you dog suffers from hotspots, Oxydex Gel is an effective treatment.

Even if your pet has generally healthy skin there are a variety of supplements that can improve the quality of your pet’s coat and relieve any dryness that may be experienced. These supplements typically contain a blend of fatty acids that are rich in EFA and DHA, such as Omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins that have been proven to help skin health, such as A, D, E and zinc.

Coat supplements make a great addition to any pet’s diet. They add shine to the coat and moisturize the skin, which reduces itchiness. The only drawback to using these supplements is that for some pets, these supplements may cause unintended weight gain because they contain mostly fats.

Providing supplements and prescription medications for your pet is an easy and effective way to deal with many problems often associated with pet ownership. Excessive shedding often occurs when a dog frequently scratches himself, damaging the skin. Dry, harsh coats often shed more readily than a soft and lustrous coat.

Keeping your pet’s coat healthy

While there are a variety of medications that can help your pet develop an attractive and healthy coat, there are other, equally important steps that you should take. The first step to a healthy coat is to keep your pet healthy. This means that your pet should be at a good weight, free of internal parasites, and up to date on vaccinations. Next, it is important to choose a quality pet food with ingredients that agree with your pet. What works for one may not work for another. It is vital to get this step right, because food allergies can play havoc with a pet’s skin and coat. If your pet is particularly sensitive to different ingredients, try one of the allergy formulas that are available. These typically have fewer ingredients, and they are less likely to be common allergens.

Regular grooming also goes a long way on improving the quality of your pet’s coat. The type of grooming required depends on the type of coat your pet has. While some pets, such as a poodle, require intensive and regular grooming sessions to look their best, others still benefit from being brushed regularly. If you start this when they are young, they may come to enjoy the time spent grooming. Also, take time to regularly wipe out the ears and eyes of your pet.

If your pet still has an unhealthy coat, you may want to add a coat supplement to your pet’s diet. These supplements can dramatically improve the quality of the coat. If your pet’s coat still leaves something to be desired, you may want to consider a visit to the vet because your pet may have an underlying health condition that is affecting the quality of its coat.

Keeping the skin of you pet healthy is very important, it is the largest organ of the body. Without the skin on your pets there would be no hair, internal organs are now external organs, and your pet is more prone to disease and infection. Not to mention your pet just wouldn’t be as cute and cuddly if there wasn’t skin and hair on them.

The skin has 3 layers; epidermis, dermis, and panniculus. The epidermis is the bodies shield against the elements and is made up of tough cells that stick together in stacks by fat. This layer of skin is constantly being replaced when the cells dry out. They then fall off and new cells are formed to replace the dead cells.

The skin helps to regulate the temperature in your pets body. It does this through the blood vessels and reduces the exposure to cold by muscular actions that fluff the hair up so that it traps air heated by the body temperature.
Your pets skin is a reflection of your dogs overall health. A bright, shiny, smooth coat is healthy. The skin protects your pet from ultra violet rays from the sun and needs to be able to heal the skin in times of trauma like burns, abrasions, and cuts that can leave the body prone to infection and dehydration.

There are many things other than cuts and burns that can bother your pet’s skin. Dry skin in the winter can be a problem too. Adding omega and vitamin E to there diet in the winter can help this. There are a lot of skin diseases that your pet can get as well like parasites, and internal infections.

Allergies are also common among animals; they can cause skin irritation that can cause more serious problems if the animal bites and scratches at the problem. Allergies are a result of an over active immune system and can release histamines that try to cleanse the body of the irritating substance. Some times animals can be given an over the counter anti histamine like benadryl. But check with your vet before administering any form of human medication to your pet. Your dog may also become itchy when allergies are affecting them. Lesions can develop from the constant scratching and may become infected if not cared for properly.

Mites can live under the skin and cause irritation and hair loss, see a vet if your pet is losing hair. It could be a symptom of a more serious condition like mange or worms. Some dogs and cats only lick and bite certain areas because they are trying to take off something that is stuck to the skin or fur. If you notice this, try to look at the area thoroughly to see if you can find the problem. It could be something like a burr or splinter. Dry skin is another option as well.

Alterative health offers a product for pets that can offer relief for minor skin irritations. Forever Living Aloe Veterinary Formula is formulated with aloe vera gel to provide soothing relief for external skin problems. The aloe vera in this product will provide quick relief for your pet so that your pet can heal faster, not to mention stop picking and biting at the irritated skin.

Does sudden change in weather affect your skin? Do you witness symptoms like skin redness, dryness and inflammation every now and then? If your answer is yes, it clearly means your skin is over sensitive and it is calling out for a little extra care from you.

But worry not. There is an easy way out which can enhance the overall health of the skin and make it strong enough to avoid problems like skin redness, inflammation etc.

Let us take a look at the two most common causes for these skin problems first:

1. Climate Change

Any change in temperature has a direct impact on the skin barrier that we have. Skin is actually responsible for regulating the body’s temperature. While trying to adapt to the temperature change outside, if the skin is over sensitive, it often results into breakdown of cells and blood vessels leading to the development of skin redness and inflammation.

2. Allergies

There are all types of ingredients like perfumes, fragrances, parabens which are especially notorious for causing skin allergies. They are commonly present in chemical laden creams and moisturizers. When you use a chemical cream, if your skin is over sensitive, the risk of developing these allergies is amplified. Apart from redness, dryness and inflammation, there are other side effects that they can cause. This includes even more serious skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

The first thing you need is to protect your skin from the above two factors – cover the skin completely while going out and stop using creams containing chemicals. In addition, you will also need to enhance the health of the skin and make it less vulnerable to inflammation and redness. This can be achieved by a few natural and powerful ingredients like –

1. Cynergy TK™ – It is a natural wool extract which comes from the New Zealand’s sheep. It contains Functional Keratin™ which helps in the regeneration of skin cells and is particularly effective in relieving from skin inflammation and redness.

2. Allantoin – It is a natural compound occurring in herbs such as comfrey, wheat, and sugar beets. It helps in restoring the already damaged skin, soothing it and providing instant relief from inflammation.

3. Witch hazel – It is a natural anti-oxidant and astringent which has tremendous ability to reduce inflammation and redness on the skin. It also benefits in other common skin conditions namely psoriasis and eczema.

In essence, the thing that you need the most is an effective natural skin care cream – one which has all the essential and powerful natural ingredients which can not only fight against skin redness but in general can do wonders to your skin.

My daughter (age 2 1/2) has an allergy to something. We’ve been to the pediatritian, dermatologist, and allergy specialist. They all say it’s an allergy, but none of their explanations pan out when I check them against reputable medical web sites.

Her skin is VERY dry all over. The insides of her elbows look like they have been rumbbed with sandpaper. Her wrists look like she has been wrestling with rose bushes. She is constantly scratching them making them bleed. Cetaphil lotion, aquaphor ointment, vasoline, prescription creams all burn her skin and make it hurt more and make the irritation worse. Have you or anyone you know dealt with something like this? Are there food allergies that can cause this? I’m ready to take her to a homeopathic doctor, since we can’t get any relief from medical doctors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have a 2 year old German Shepard . She is on frontline , but she scratches and itches and bites herself constantly. Her hair is falling out , ( I am guessing from scratching so much) her skin is very dry and scaley, and she has a horrible odor to her. Not a regular dog odor, I mean aweful odor coming from her skin.We have invested in about 10 differant itch relief, moisturising, and odor shampoo’s. None worked. We took her to the vet, they tested her skin and said she had mange, in the next breath, they said she didn’t, but sent us home with more shampoo and capsules, and said if that didn’t work to bring her in and they would do an allergy test for $800. Well the shampoo’s and capsules didn’t work either. Any other suggestions on what this could be and is $800 a little much for an allergy test?

I have noticed my skin being itchy since about March.

During the winter, my joints ache, so I take hot showers and use a heated blanket at night to help with the aches and pain. I noticed in March, the skin on my legs started itching when I had the electric blanket on me. Stopped using it, but still was a little itchy. Was real itchy after a hot shower, so I started turning it down to warm and I wasn’t as itchy.

Since the summer has started, I am real itchy, especially on my legs. Sometimes my arms or belly itch but it seems more concentrated on my legs and parts of my feet. I have scratched til I have bled. I have tried lotions and creams from the cheap kind to the expensive kind, yet only get temporary relief. I have tried Coritzone cream, temporary relief. I have tried Itch-X which has benzocaine in it or something. Again, Temporary relief.

I am sick of scratching.

As for allergies, the only thing I am aware of having is Ragweed/Hayfever and allergic reaction to Pennicillin (haven’t had that in 25 years) My diet hasn’t changed, I don’t have any pets so fleas are not an issue.

Please help!
I have taken Benedryl at night and it helps a bit, but I don’t want to be dependent upon that.

If I knew what was causing the itching then I could get to the source of the problem, not mask it

In the Bible, the Dead Sea is known as the “Eastern Sea” or the “Sea of the Arava”. The ancient Greeks and Romans called it “Mare Asphaltitus”, meaning the “Clay Sea”, due to the patches of clay, or asphalt floating on its surface. Later on, since life in this body of water was deemed impossible, it was dubbed the “Dead Sea”, and this term was adopted by various European languages. Mosaics from the Byzantine era depict fish swimming toward the Dead Sea from the Jordan River and rushing to turn back and flee toward the north, to the fresh water sources.

The Dead Sea region offers a rare combination of nature sites, history and unique healing centers, each of which has the potential to inspire autonomous tourism development. The Dead Sea, at approximately 417 meters below sea level, is the lowest point on the surface of the earth. It is a remnant of the ancient “Lake Lisan”, the body of water which once extended from the north of the Sea of Galilee to Hazeva in the Arava.

The water’s salinity, with a concentration of about 340 grams per liter (10 times that of the Mediterranean!), makes floating natural and effortless and instills a sense of peace and tranquility. The air is dry, rich in oxygen and free of any environmental pollution, and the temperatures are relatively high, even in the height of winter. The fact that the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays are naturally filtered makes it possible to sunbathe without burning and is instrumental in treating various skin diseases. The natural “healing waters” along the coast, which are rich in minerals and natural heat, combined with the black mud deposits, are the ideal foundation for health and beauty treatments.

The region’s nature reserves and scenic diversity offer a unique combination of arid desert vistas and oases alongside pools and waterfalls teeming with diverse flora and fauna (mountain goats, pikas, insects, reptiles, various species of fowl, etc.). The region’s historical sites are among the most renowned in the world, namely: Massada, Qumran, Jericho, Ein Gedi, the Roman fortresses and the monasteries in the Judea Desert.

A great many resources are invested in developing infrastructures, facilities and services dedicated to the tourist industry. The region offers about 4,000 rooms in hotels of various standards, kibbutz resort villages, hostels and other accommodation facilities, with adjacent services such as: parking lots, public beaches, well-kept nature reserves and fascinating tourist sites. The vacationers and tourists in the region can choose from a wide variety of excursions and activities, including desert tours on foot, in special vehicles and on camels, Bedouin accommodation, rock climbing and rappelling courses and excursions, as well as archeological and agricultural tours.

SOURCE OF LIFE AND HEALTH

A unique combination of natural resources having therapeutic effects has turned the Dead Sea area into a healing center unparalleled anywhere else on the face of the earth.

The salty seawater, with its unusually high concentration of minerals, the natural hot springs rich in minerals and sulphur, and

the extraordinary climatic conditions, including uniquely filtered sun rays and an oxygen-rich dry air, due to the high barometric pressure prevailing here in the lowest spot on earth (417 meters below sea level), a therapeutic black mud – all combine in providing the basis for the successful effect of the Dead Sea therapies.

Contributing to these ideal therapeutic conditions are the comfortable stable temperatures in this seaside desert most of the year, the pure unpolluted air, which is free of allergens and contaminants, while containing minerals deriving from evaporation of this inland sea that are healthy for breathing.

These natural resources have been shown to provide a beneficial effect on various illnesses, including chronic incurable diseases, and have led to the renowned reputation of the Dead Sea area as a natural spa constituting a source of promoting health and improving the quality of life.

For some 2,000 years (as the ancient texts attest), people have come to immerse themselves in the Dead Sea for healing purposes. The awareness of the healing attributes of the Dead Sea was truly reawakened at the beginning of the 1970s, when the scientific research studies in the area gained momentum and their findings were published.

All this recognition led to an accelerated development of hotel facilities, along with the establishment of health and therapy centers, operating on the basis of scientifically based findings, which as a result have turned the Dead Sea area into an attractive internationally recognized healing center, drawing each year tens of thousands of patients from around the world to find relief for their ailments and pains.

THE DEAD SEA EFFECT

The accumulated clinical experience and research data on all aspects of climatic therapy, which is based on a combination of exposure of the body to the sun with an immersion in the Dead Sea waters, has enabled physicians to establish a protocol of treatment methods referred to as “Dead Sea Climatotherapy.”

Medical and scientific research studies indicate that Dead Sea Climatotherapy is very effective in treating numerous illnesses, the most common being the skin disease, psoriasis. Dead Sea climatotherapy has also been found to have therapeutic effects on atopic dermatitis (skin allergy), vitiligo (loss of pigmentation), and early stage mycosis fungoides (skin cancer).

Natural springs containing minerals and sulphur, black medicinal mud, with antibacterial activity and hyperemic properties, are also found along the shores of the Dead Sea.

An anti-aging effect discovered recently in the Dead Sea minerals, as well as in the medicinal mud, has made the Dead Sea even more popular, attracting people who seek to slow down their skin aging process.

As opposed to the artificial treatments administered in the conventional clinic or hospital environment, the relaxing atmosphere during Dead Sea climatotherapy, where patients mix socially with other guests in a hotel atmosphere, has often been shown to have psychological benefits, by providing a positive affect on the patients’ self image and, as a result, on his or her quality of live.

THE DEAD SEA TREATMENT

The beneficial effects of Dead Sea climatotherapy on dermatological diseases, such as psoriasis, eczema, lichen planus and vitiligo, have been amply documented in a multitude of scientific publications over the past 40 years.

These studies have established that optimum results in the treatment of psoriasis, for example, are achieved by a short-term immersion in the Dead Sea water, followed in most cases and depending on the time of the year by a 1½-2½ gradual exposure to the sun once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Winter is not recommended for this kind of disease.

A rooftop meteorological station on the southwestern shore of the Dead Sea performs continuous UV monitoring and provides online data on the intensity of the daily solar ambient radiation. Studies with radiosensitive detector badges placed on the body have been conducted recently to determine the actual amount of radiation absorbed by sunbathers.

A special computerized program is installed in the solarium at Ein Bokek, enabling patients to regulate their initial daily exposure time by themselves, based on their skin type and the radiation intensity measured during exposure.

The actual amount of energy to which the patient’s body is exposed by these schemes is about one third of the amount applied in artificial irradiation therapy regimes, yet the therapeutic results of the Dead Sea natural treatment lead to a 80-90% remission, comparing favorably with artificial irradiation modes. The mean duration of remission has been studied in 64 German psoriasis patients and found to last on the average six months.

The Effects of Dead Sea Climatotherapy on the Pathogenesis in Psoriasis

A study published in 2003 examined the effects of Dead Sea climatotherapy on the pathological changes and immunological modulation in psoriatic patients’ skin.

Histological examination of the skin found that the characteristic pathological changes found in psoriasis had normalized, while immunological studies showed a major reversal in immunological activation.

Preliminary data show that optimum results in clearing psoriatic lesions were achieved faster when Dead Sea climatotherapy is combined with topical administration of calcipotriol.

Repeat studies have shown that even severe forms of psoriasis, which otherwise require hospitalization and often need systemic medications, such as oral retinoids, methotrexate or cyclosporine, respond remarkably to climatotherapy, let alone milder forms, all without the potential side effects often associated with the administration of these systemic medications.

Dead Sea Climatotherapy is subsidized by sick funds and national health agencies: A study performed by the Swiss Psoriasis Association has shown that economically, while being equally effective as artificial treatments given to severely affected psoriasis patients, Dead Sea climatotherapy is less expensive when comparing overall expenditures for both modes of therapy.

In view of its cost effectiveness, health funds in Western European countries, such as Germany and Denemark, as well as in several Eastern European countries, subsidize Dead Sea climatotherapy for skin diseases, while Norway also subsidizes Dead Sea treatments for joint diseases.
