Relief for seasonal allergies?

In the past I was prescribed flonase for nasal allergies. Are there any over the counter alternatives?

As winter changes into spring, around the world many of us are suffering from the sneezing, wheezing, runny nose and itching eyes that accompanies seasonal allergies. Relief doesn’t necessarily have to come in the form of a drugstore counter remedy, there are many natural ways to help your body deal with the effects of seasonal allergens.
1. Nasal Passage and Sinus Washing: The Neti Pot
The Neti pot naturally cleanses and refreshes the nasal passages to help relieve allergy symptoms. A simple saline solution works well to wash out allergens and thin nasal mucous, but you can boost the effectiveness of the wash by adding a tonic of goldenseal and freeze-dried nettles. The goldenseal acts as an astringent and has some anti-microbial properties. I usually recommend a Neti Pot cleanse once or twice daily.

2. Quercetin: The Anti-Allergy Bioflavanoid
Quercetin, a naturally occurring bioflavanoid, has properties that reduce the inflammation associated with allergies and control the release of histamine. Quercetin is non-toxic, but barely soluble in water and therefore is not absorbed very well. I usually recommend combining it with bromelin, an enzyme from pineapple, to increase its absorption. Quercetin dosed 1,000 -2,000mg per day in 4-6 divided is optimal for reducing allergies. Vitamin C also helps to reduce histamine.

I have seasonal allergies and with the pollen count being so high, my ears are totally plugged and it’s getting painful. I’ve tried Sudafed and Ibuprofen and neither are giving much relief. Any other suggestions???

There are a number of allergens that can cause seasonal allergic rhinitis. Most of these identified allergens are airborne, such as the pollen that is blown about from trees, plants and grasses. Another type of airborne allergen, mold spores, is the seasonal culprit of mold allergies.


This type of allergy is generally found from spring to early fall, with a peak in the late summer months, although other types of mold can cause symptoms nearly year-round. The allergens that cause mold allergies are generally found in humid climates, and moist areas like rotted logs and compost piles.

I thought I was allergic to ragweed, but thought it would be over, or nearly over, by now. It’s rated as “low” for my area, but I’m still miserable. My sinuses are so blocked, it’s like trying to breathe through a brick wall, especially at night. It’s affecting my quality of life. I’ve been taking antihistamines for a couple of months now, with not much relief. Is anyone still suffering from ragweed allergies?

Anyone have any good natural “cures” for seasonal allergies? I hate taking drugs everyday for this long!

My symptoms include constant runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, somewhat blocked sinuses, sneezing, coughing, and recently, I have lots of difficulty breathing accompanied by wheezing. I’m planning on taking a hot shower and possibly picking up some local honey tomorrow. I refuse to take any drugs, so don’t bother suggesting it because I’ve heard it 1000 times. Any suggestions other than Quercetin and the like? Also, I don’t currently have the option to buy an air purifier. I drink a decent amount of water and green tea, don’t consume dairy, and pretty much the only sugar I consume comes from fruits. Please, please, please help me!!
