When I chew Dentyne ice, I find it is able to provide temporary nasal congestive relief especially during spring time when allergy season starts. Why is this?

Best answer:

Answer by jwjkrjstorm
Because it kinda acts like Vicks vapor rub – there is so much mint in the gum that it has the same effect. When you chew it, it is opening up your sinuses because you are smelling the Mint in the gum.

Grass Pollen Allergies – 5 Ways To Survive During Grass Pollen Season

Grass pollen is one of the biggest airborne triggers for those who wrestle with hay fever. But the following 5 tips are easy to do and will help you survive the grass pollen season in good shape.

Choose Outdoor Time Carefully–Grass pollens are generally higher during early morning hours. Routinely plan outdoor activities after about 10 in the morning:00 a.m. or after a thunderstorm clears the air. Pick days that are little wind for outside activities. Pollen is light weight and can be carried by the wind for an amazing number of miles.

Check Pollen Count Daily–The American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology has spore and pollen monitoring stations across the United States, Canada, and Argentina. Signing up with an email address will get your local pollen counts delivered directly to your inbox.

Knowing the pollen count in your area before the day begins allows you to plan your day so you’re inside if the count is high, or to be able to enjoy outside if the count is low enough. Your local weather forecast cannot be beat for accurate information about your area.

Know the Season–Since the arrival of grass pollen is not only seasonal, but is greatly determined by your region, know when the season happens in your area, and be prepared. Use air conditioning rather than window fans, avoid use of the whole house fan that brings in air from the outside, and travel in your car with the windows up and vents to the outside closed.

Rework Your Garden–There are approximately 1,200 species of grass in the United States, but only a very small percentage of them are responsible for triggering pollen allergies. The most common offenders are Bermuda, Johnson, Kentucky bluegrass, Orchard, Sweet vernal grass, and Timothy. Consider sending a plug of your grass to be analyzed by an extension center of your local university.

If you find your lawn is planted with one of the grasses that is most like to trigger your allergies, have someone else mow the lawn, mow the lawn yourself but only when using a HEPA mask, or think about replanting the lawn with one of the other 1,199 species that are available.

This obviously won’t prevent the wind from spreading the pollen, but at least you won’t feel as though you’re stepping into a mine field each time you step outside your home during pollen season.

Remove Pollen Indoors with a HEPA Air Purifier–Unfortunately, regardless of how many precautions you take, grass pollen can still get into your home on shoes, pets, clothing, and air currents that are unavoidable when entering or leaving your home.

Using a high efficiency particle arresting (or HEPA) air purifier that is specifically designed to remove pollen can virtually eliminate pollen inside your home, and make home a safe haven where you can relax and rejuvenate.

Spring is that wonderful time of year that’s associated with rebirth. After a long winter, all the flowers and plants begin to bud and bloom. There’s nothing like the beauty of new leaves and the sights of fresh flowers everywhere. That is, unless you or a loved one suffers from allergies.

Then, the thoughts of spring are more about just being able to breath and the misery of constant allergy symptoms. While there are many people allergic to a lot of things, even people who usually do not suffer from allergies can be affected in the springtime. This is no doubt due to the explosive growth of various pollens and natural substances that make for those spring flowers and growth.

Well, we can’t do much about the various pollens in the air, it is possible to get some relief from constant sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. One such way to help limit the symptoms is to better control your indoor environment. Allergies can actually become worse indoors due to the potential of increased concentrations of these natural allergy triggers.

A good way to help limit the amount of allergens in your home is to keep your windows and doors closed as much as possible. If not practical, you may want to consider shade screens. Shade screens have fewer and smaller holes than regular screens. This in turn may keep some of the dirt and pollen out of your home. At the very least, you should consider washing your window screens to remove the buildup of allergens on the screen material itself.

You may also be interested in a free report on how to eliminate asthma triggers in your home that is available at the link below. Asthma and allergy sufferers have many of the same triggers in common.

Though many people suggest the use of air conditioning during high allergy season. This really doesn’t work if you don’t change or clean the filters regularly. If you or a loved one has been having an especially difficult time during allergy season, you may want to consider using high efficiency particulate air or HEPA type filters in your equipment.

While air conditioning cools and dries the air, many of us simply cannot afford this luxury. An alternative is to get a high quality dehumidifier for use indoors. An air purifier can even be used to help limit the allergy triggers inside your home.

The key to living with allergies in the springtime is to limit your exposure to the allergens that bring on the symptoms. To that end, when possible don’t venture outdoors during windy periods. Doing your own lawn work is also not a great idea. Consider hiring a landscaping company to handle the plant and landscape chores such as cutting the lawn, pulling weeds, etc.

If you find that your allergy problems are out of control, you should seek help from your doctor. While many of the over-the-counter nasal sprays etc. do work many are habit-forming and create more problems than they solve.

I think my 8 month old has seasonal allergies, but I’m not sure. For the last few days her eyes have been red and watery, she’s been sneezing tons, and she keeps rubbing her eyes like they are bothering her. My question is, does anyone know if babies this young can have seasonal allergies, and what are the symptoms? If she does have allergies, what will her doctor do for her? Is she old enough for medication, or what would we have to do to give her some relief? She has a doctors appointment this next week, but I was just hoping for some advice and answers from people with babies in the same situation. Thanks! And 10 points for best answer! Oh, and neither me nor my husband have allergies to pollen, but my husband is allergic to cats. And no, she hasn’t been around people with cats or cats at all. And the pollen count has been really high lately, that’s why I ask! Thanks again!

Allergy triggers, like oak, ash, alder, elm, poplar, sycamore, grasses, molds, mulberry, and ragweed, can cause anything from sneezing to watery eyes to fever.

Experts estimate that 20 percent of Americans suffer from allergies. And that number is even higher in certain regions of the country. For example, almost half of the population in the Southwest fights the allergy battle every year.

To help keep allergens out of the air in their homes, many people use special filters as part of their air conditioning system. But what about the millions of allergy sufferers using evaporative coolers instead of air conditioners?

Evaporative coolers, also referred to as “swamp coolers,” bring in outside air to cool the home, but most units have no built-in air filtration.

Coolers generally consist of a fan and damp pads. Units cool outside air by about 20 degrees by drawing the air through the wet pads and blowing it into the house. As opposed to air conditioners, which make circulating air drier, coolers slightly increase the humidity of the air.

Now, cooler owners can filter the air coming into their homes. CoolPad Plus is an evaporative cooler pad that provides both high-efficiency cooling and allergy relief. Coolpad Plus has a special layer of polyester to provide increased air filtration of pollen, mold spores, dust and ragweed. It is designed to help relieve allergy symptoms and also to keep the cooler and home cleaner.

Coolpad Plus removes up to 89 percent of pollen, dust and airborne particles. Eight out of 10 people say CoolPad Plus out- performs their previous cooler pad, and it lasts twice as long as competing brands to cool all season long. Rigid pad construction prevents sagging and hot air leaks. CoolPad Plus also contains a special wetting agent for faster cooling and has more than 190,000 water absorbing baffles per pad for better comfort.

Not only do temperatures and weather conditions change as the fall season approaches, but those annoying allergies you get every year, around this time, are likely to hit again. But don’t worry just yet, there are ways to fight the annoyance so you can be as allergy-free as possible this fall.

Sometimes it is hard to distinguish whether the symptoms you are experiencing are due to a cold or allergies. The clear difference between the two is colds usually tend to be short-lived whereas allergies can run for weeks or even months. The most common allergy is pollen (also called hay fever), which causes symptoms to flare-up due to the pollen grains floating through the air. Allergies tend to occur when the seasons change and you may notice your allergies approaching at almost the exact same time every year.

There are many things you can do to help ensure you do not get allergies this fall season, and here are some of the most effective prevention tips:

Close Your Windows – keep your windows closed in both your house and your car especially at night. This will prevent pollen and mold spores from entering your house and into the air you breathe. Stay Indoors – staying indoors (with your windows shut) is probably the best way to ensure you don’t get allergies this season. Most of the pollen is found outdoors, so eliminate this allergic element as much as possible. Use Your Air Conditioner – Turning on your air conditioner provides relief by cleaning, cooling and drying the air in your home. Dehumidifiers or air filters will also help in these situations. Use Air Ionizers& HEPA Filters – These products remove particulates from the air you breathe. Protect Yourself – If it is necessary for you to go outside to do yard work (or for other reasons), protect yourself by wearing a mask or a cover-up of some sort to keep you from breathing in the “contaminated air”. Take Showers and Baths – If you are outdoors for extended periods of time, take either a shower or a bath when you return home. Showers and baths will wash away some of the pollen that is left on your body. Changing your clothes when you come in from being outside is also a good idea. If none of these things work for you and you find yourself suffering from allergy symptoms anyway, there are treatments which can help. Nasal Sprays, oral antihistamines and decongestants are all great for allergy relief. For itchy and watery eyes there are many forms of eye drops like Visine which you can purchase at any drugstore.

Immunotherapy (an allergy shot) is also a great way to help with your allergies this season. Check with your doctor before using any medications or treatments since some can potentially cause harmful side effects.
