Be alert to the hazards of summer air pollution, and particularly the effects of ozone. It can worsening problems at this time of year for individuals with allergies. For some it’s pollen, for others, trees, flowers, or grasses. The easiest advice is to avoid these allergens, says Kunle Iluyomade, MD, a pulmonologist on the medical staff at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. Ozone is major player in this for a lot of people, even for those without a history of chronic lung disease. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine says that prolonged exposure to ozone over many years can increase the risk of dying from lung disease. Avoid exposure on days where you know or suspect that ozone concentration will be high, Iluyomade says, and choose early morning or late evening hours for outdoor workouts. Shortness of breath is a worrisome symptom. If you are a patient with chronic lung disease, and on medication that is no longer providing relief, it’s time to call your pulmonologist or primary care physician.
