Here’s food for thought before you send your child off to school. A national study found that almost 6 million children under the age of 18 suffer from food allergies. Thirty-eight percent of them had a history of severe reactions. The news is most troubling for parents of young children. “The types of reactions you get as a child are potentially very different than the types of reactions you get as an adult. They might just have intractable vomiting or significant diarrhea, not the hives and the closed up throat and difficulty breathing that you might get for an older person,” says Dr. Nancy Witham, a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System. Dr. Witham warns that children can also experience significant breathing problems. “Anaphylaxis being the worst case scenario of an allergy where the blood pressure drops and the heart rate either raises or drops.” Ninety percent of food allergies are caused by eight foods: milk, eggs, wheat, soy, tree nuts, fish, shellfish and peanuts. The most common: peanuts, milk and shellfish. It doesn’t take much to case an allergic reaction. In fact 1/44000th of a peanut kernel can trigger a response in some children, which is why it’s important to arm your allergic child with the proper tools. “For younger children we do recommend wearing the ID bracelets some sort of notification that suggests to other people that the child has a significant allergy,” says Dr. Witham. Your doctor may also help you with an allergy action kit, and …

Hi, I was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia but we don’t know the extent of it. It is sometime caused by a corn and wheat intolerance. I have been avoiding corn and have had a lot of relief, I just need to see if it’s both corn and wheat or just corn. So I need a food that I can buy that I know only has wheat and no corn to see if I react to it. Thanks.

Food Allergy And Cow Milk Allergy

Article by Terry Henry

A food hypersensitivity occurs as a result of some part of the immune system, which normally protects us from infectious agents, inappropriately reacting to the proteins in foods we tend to eat. Food allergic diseases usually occur in the primary decade of life and are directly linked to the maturation of the immune system. Generally, clinical symptoms don’t seem to be detected at birth and though the production of IgE starts within the eleventh week of gestation, no specific sensitization to food allergens can be detected in wire blood.During the primary months of life initial IgE responses to food proteins, notably hen’s egg and cow’s milk may be observed even in completely breast-fed infants. In such individuals, it is proposed that exposure occurs through proteins in their mother’s milk.Allergic reactions to foods can be broadly divided into immediate on-set and delayed on-set reactions.IgE-Mediated Food AllergiesThe components of the immune system responsible for immediate on-set reactions (the foremost dramatic example of that is food anaphylaxis) are IgE antibodies. In allergic individuals (who are generally known as being “atopic”) eating sure food proteins (like whey and casein protein contained in cow’s milk) ends up in the assembly of specific IgE antibody molecules directed against the protein. The second time the individual eats the food, these specific IgE molecules interact with every other, and the protein, to cause the release of harmful chemicals (like histamine) from special mast cells. This causes the damage related to the symptoms of food allergy. Damage could occur to the skin, respiratory system or gastrointestinal tract, where the symptoms of food allergy are almost completely seen.Non-IgE-Mediated Food Allergy”T-cells” are the components of the immune systems accountable for delayed-sort food allergic reactions. In people with a predisposition for delayed on-set food allergy, initial ingestion of food protein ends up in the production of specific types of “T-cell”. When the food is subsequently ingested, the food protein is “processed” in an exceedingly variety of ways in which and “presented” to the previously generated food-specific T-cells. These T-cells then “invade” the realm of the body regarding to suffer damage, like skin, bowel. This processing, presenting and invasion will take 24-48 hours that explains the delayed response. T-cells unleash chemicals that, through a series of events, result in the injury related to symptoms of food allergy. You’ll be able to realize additional data on food allergies the immune mechanisms on Act Against Allergy – Food allergies Infants and Cow Milk AllergyCow Milk Allergy (CMA) is a reaction to cow milk that results from a hypersensitive immune response to one or additional milk proteins.Milk is the most common explanation for food allergy affecting a minimum of 2-three% of infants. However symptoms suggestive of cows’ milk allergy could be gift in up to 15% of babies, highlighting the importance of getting an accurate diagnosis. Most babies with cow milk allergy develop symptoms inside the first few months of life. It’s rare for symptoms to start once the age of twelve months.Symptoms of cow milk allergy will be:? skin symptoms, (e.g. eczema and rash), ? abdomen or gut symptoms (e.g. vomiting, diarrhea or constipation) ? respiratory symptoms (i.e. wheezing) Most babies with cow milk allergy will have two or more symptoms. The recommended management approach to cow milk allergy is to completely avoid cow milk protein. Because milk is a vital food for infants, cutting it out from a baby’s diet could place them at risk of poor growth. This risk can be overcome with another hypoallergenic formula, such as amino-acid based mostly formulas (AAF) or extensively hydrolyzed formulas (eHF), which will give fast relief of symptoms and allows optimal growth and development.

THe food industry REFUSES to remove this dye from their foods and it’s ruining the lives of MANY people. My daughter is highly allergic to red 40 and so are 2 of my other daughters. My 12 year old is shown here with how she reacts after eating this. We are not sure how to get her to stop eating/drinking it, because it’s in a lot of school foods. I am very frustrated and would LOVE to start a petition to REMOVE THIS FROM SCHOOL FOOD! Anyone with me? Please also go to Ambers webshow to see what she is like without having eaten this horrid dye!

Question by : Eczema Help,..Possible food allergy?
I have had eczema non stop for ten years without remission unless I used steroids and it would clear up. I have swore off steroids due to the side effects and I have suffered non stop for 2 years straight without one second of relief from intense itching, burning etc.. So by the grace of God I had a thought that maybe I have a food allergy and I decided to eliminate all wheat/gluten from my diet. Within 2 days my skin totally cleared up and lasted a whole week! But now it has come back a little bit, not near as bad or even close to what it was for the last 10 years. I had a chronic stuffy nose that has totally cleared up as well,. I don’t understand why it came back a little bit maybe it needs more time to heal I’m not familiar with food allergies so if you have had a similar situation PLEASE let me know if I should con’t with this diet or what you think Thanks!!

Answer by carolethecatlover
Take a course of NYSTATIN. Candida in the gut feeding on gluten, or releasing it thru to the bllodstream. Interesting.

Question by Mom to 2 lil boys and LOVE THEM: Does this sound like a food allergy?
The last time I had a milkshake I had a bad pain in the middle of my chest, right in between of my ribcage, as well as a migraine headache that lasted 2 days. I ate cheese the other day, and the same thing happened. Ibuprofen did not help my bad headache and the pharmacist said to take Gas-Ex to help with the chest pain, but that did not help one bit either. I took Pepcid as well, but no relief
I eat cereal with milk in it, but I don’t have any problems, though I don’t drink the milk.
I don’t know what is the matter, maybe one of you has experienced this?

Best answer:

Answer by FYIIM1KO
It sounds like you could be lactose intolerant.Cut out all dairy products and see if that doesn’t help.(except your milk in you cereal) Go to web med and type in lactose intolerant and see what they have to say.

Sarah Gitlin talks about her lifetime of dealing with food allergies. Diagnosed at 10 months old, Sarah spent her childhood unlike most other children, but very like much like other food allergy sufferers. Now 18, Sarah is among those leading the charge for a cure. Children growing up with food allergies must avoid foods the rest of us take for granted, such as peanuts, milk, wheat, eggs, and more. Luckily, through existing science a cure is possible.

Slowly Wean While Being Wary of Food Allergies

Article by Christian Medford

After months of breast feeding and/or bottle feeding every 2-4 hours, there will be finally some relief. When breast milk is the sole source of nutrition for your little treasure, it will soon be time mix milk and food in their diet. So it is time to start introducing food, and this is called Weaning. Weaning is the transition to reduce the nursing time and mix their diet with food, eventually making a full transition to food. But you want to make sure they are ready. My lactation consultant says that you should look at introducing food. This can happen as early as 4 months as stage is actually between 6-8 months. You should attempt to keep breast milk in their diet for at least the first year, but on a much more scaled down schedule, as you begin the long weaning process.

Child health and nutrition is our focus as parents. We make sure they have the appropriate vaccines; they are given the right care when it comes to hygiene, cleanliness and sanitation. They take the right vitamins; drink enough water, their fed well…and so on. Our children are our complete responsibility. Prior to the discharge from the hospital and during consults or check ups with the pediatrician we are given constant reminder and additional knowledge on health care for children. So we have the definite dos and don’ts to their nutrition and health down to a science, which ultimately includes slowly weaning them at the right age as well as the progression.

When you start the weaning process, you need to be careful about food allergies. We start by feeding smooth and easy to swallow foods. Single ingredient cereals or plain fruits and vegetables are ideal to know their tolerance and to easily point out the possible reason for break out of rashes, diarrhea, vomiting or wheezing in case they are allergic to the food. Give each food 3-5 days interval before adding another new variation. But be reminded at all times that “food is only a factor for those allergic reactions”. It can be from many other things. And those signs and symptoms mentioned above can even be due to a far different reason. Child health is pretty sensitive and needing immediate attention. Consult your pediatrician right away for any abnormality encountered. “Assumptions” are not within the dictionary of children’s health and well being.

Stay away from food that could easily choke them. First starts with mashed soft vegetables like potatoes and carrots; it needs to be thin in consistency like pureed sweet potatoes, and scraped apples or bananas. The following week you can give blend simple foods like boiled meat with potato, and then blend chicken breast with carrots can follow after 3 days. The idea is to introduce a whole new taste apart from milk to slowly encouraging them to chew, and all the while learning if there are any food allergies you the parent need to aware of.

Introducing food is both exciting and challenging for the child and the parent. Let it be a fun addition to your dinner routine and to use it as a wonderful tool for further mommy-baby (or daddy-baby) bonding time. Trust me meal time will never be the same, just be prepared to bath time immediately afterwards.

Our strategy begins with allowing them to trick-or-treat and show off that costume, but make sure they don’t eat ANYTHING from the bag until a parent goes through it at home. Believe it not, that’s when the fun really begins! Before Halloween, stock up on safe, desirable treats for them (remember to read every label every time), and don’t limit yourself only to food items. Have plenty of age- and gender-appropriate toys on hand, too (such a mini Play-Dough tubs, Silly Bands, temporary tatoos, and trendy trading cards). When your children have finished trick-or-treating, let them trade the candy they’re allergic to for the safe candy and prizes. Make a celebration of it – instead of feeling deprived, your food allergic child can feel extra special!

Question by Anne: Is there any kind of aid or relief for a family with anaphylactic food allergies?

Best answer:

Answer by tessasmomy
The only way to “treat” a food allergy is to practice complete and total avoidance of the food (s). If the family has children they can join www.kidswithfoodallergies.org and talk with other parents.

Food allergies are covered under the Americans with Disablities Act. If the parents have allergies and it is affecting them at work they can ask for changes. I believe food allergies are in Title (Section) 2.
