Can dogs take Zyrtec or Claratin for allergies?
I have 2 dogs & both of them have red eyes, licked raw paws & under bellies! I have tried all the food elimination possibilities, I’ve tried expensive food cheap food, I’ve cooked food & no relief! I don’t want to do the steroids from the vet because of liver & kidney damage & it only works for a week or so at a time! I think they are allergic to the grass in our yard & possibly the carpeting in our house! Help! can I give them the allergy meds I take!

Since those medicines are formulated specifically for humans, I’d err on the side of, “No, not okay for canine consumption.”
no those are human doses. Assuming they would work which they probably wont it will kill the animals liver.
Benadryl works on dogs very well. My dog needs about 2 a week. Vet recommended it.
NO!!!! DONT DO THAT! We went to the vet for rthe same reasons and you CAN give them that stuff, BUT!!!!!!! LISTEN! YOU HAVE TO GET IT FROM THE VET! THEY MAKE SPECIAL ONES FOR DOGS! DONT GIVE IT IN THE FORM THAT WE HAVE!!!!! DONT DO IT!!!
Not unless the vet says you can. Certain OTC medication can be fatal to your pet. Never give your pet OTC meds unless specified by the vet.
My vet recommended the pink Benadryll in pill form.

No, Never give an animal anything that is intended for human use only. Even in very small doses some things, like paracetamol, can be deadly.
Maybe find a holistic animal carer and see if they can offer some organic advise?
Or take them back to the vet and suck it up.
Good luck and I hope your pups get better soon

no you cannot give them the same allergy meds we take.. many human medications are TOXIC to dogs.
Discuss other options with your vet on relieving their allergies.

Our vet suggested 2 10mg zyrtec pills each day for skin allergies in Colorado. After giving him the first one, we noticed how tired he got, so we only give him one at bedtime. His skin looks so much better. We buy the generic version at Sam’s.

Glad to read that Zyrtec and other prescription allergy meds are safe for some dogs. We have a 100 lb. 17year old Akita who has terrible allergies when the aspen trees start leafing out. She has runny eyes, scratches until she bleeds and generally looks terrible. We tried chloraminiphone, benadryl and she looked stoned all the time: listless and sleepy. I gave her a 10 mg. zyrtec this evening and couldn’t sleep because I was worried it would hurt her. Vets up here in Colorado would charge $500 or more for the same info. Any other suggestions??

Yes a dog can take Zyrtec. We checked with our Beagle’s vet and he could take 2 x 10mg tablets daily provided they did not contain pseudoephedrine. But CHECK WITH YOUR VET FIRST.

Like many have said you shouldn’t give them medication meant for us. Consider getting some allergen covers for your bedding, pillows and any other soft items he or she comes into contact with. These are usually advertised for controlling allergies and asthma in humans, but they are also excellent for allergy control for pets.
Also, try whipping their feet off before they come inside with a damp towel or hypo-allergenic moist wipes (you can purchase these at pet supply stores) to prevent pollen and other irritants being tracked into your home. Allergy control for pets inside the home is more effective if you keep the outside from coming in!
Here’s a great article on what’s causing the allergies in your dogs, http://petairapy.com/a-number-of-conditions-cause-dog-skin-problems/
Hope this helps!
